Here is what the survey covered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Four-day Tests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two-tier Test system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes to the current World Test Championship (WTC) format.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How the ICC can encourage more players around the world to play Tests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of nations playing Test cricket in 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plus, whether the toss should stay or go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cricblog.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Future-of-Test-cricket-survey-results.jpg\" alt=\"See what over 2,000 fans have had to say on the most pressing issues in our future of Test cricket fan survey.\" class=\"wp-image-44203\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-future-of-test-cricket-survey-insights-on-two-tier-system-4-day-tests-wtc-structure-and-more\"><strong>Future of Test cricket survey: Insights on two-tier system, 4-day Tests, WTC structure and more<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-two-tier-test-system\"><strong>Two-tier Test system<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The two-tier system is arguably the biggest topic in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procricketid.com\/\">Test cricket right now<\/a><\/strong>. Here\u2019s what fans think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>55.1%<\/strong>\u00a0are in favour of two-tier only if there is promotion and relegation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>10.9%<\/strong>\u00a0are in favour of the move regardless whether there is promotion and relegation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>34%<\/strong>\u00a0are against the move entirely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here is a split by nation in the survey results:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Supported nation<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Yes, only if there is promotion and relegation<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Yes, regardless whether there is promotion<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>No to two-tier Test cricket<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>India<\/td><td>56.25%<\/td><td>13.84%<\/td><td>29.46%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Australia<\/td><td>56.88%<\/td><td>8.13%<\/td><td>35%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>England<\/td><td>51.61%<\/td><td>7.26%<\/td><td>41.13%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South Africa<\/td><td>57.99%<\/td><td>7.10%<\/td><td>34.91%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Others, including WI, NZ, PAK, USA, NEP, AFG, ZIM, SL, BAN, IRE<\/td><td>65.91%<\/td><td>8.33%<\/td><td>27.27%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether there will be promotion and relegation system is currently up in the air. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is not keen on a two-tier system as relegation would mean not being in the same division as Australia and India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of options that we\u2019ve got to look at \u2013 tiers would be one of them,\u201d said ECB chairman Richard Thompson on BBC\u2019s\u00a0<em>Test Match Special<\/em>, as quoted by\u00a0<em>ESPNcric<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wouldn\u2019t want, as England, we may go through a fallow period, and that means, what, we fall into Division Two and we don\u2019t play Australia and India? That couldn\u2019t happen. There has to be a sense that common sense needs to play out here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said the big three have a responsibility to protect other nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on\u00a0<em>SEN Radio<\/em>, Greenberg said, \u201cMy open mind [to a two-tier system] is in reference to, if it helps grow the opportunities for those other countries to be stronger, and have better resources in Test match cricket, if it does that, then I\u2019m open for it,\u201d he said, as quoted by\u00a0<em>ESPNcricinfo<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut if it doesn\u2019t achieve that, and it actually affects the opposite, then I wouldn\u2019t be supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-four-day-tests\"><strong>Four-day Tests<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The likes of Michael Vaughan are in favour of four-day Tests. In late 2024, the former England captain said, \u201cI believe four-day cricket would be easier to schedule. It\u2019d be easy for everyone to understand that cricket starts every Thursday when we\u2019re playing the Test match game and it finishes on a Sunday \u2026 if it makes it,\u201d he told\u00a0<em>SEN Radio.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be honest, the way that the players go out and play their business now, they don\u2019t play like I used to play or some of the teams back in the 80s and 90s played. They\u2019re playing a brand of cricket which is pretty much to try and win as quick as they possibly can and put the opposition under pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI genuinely believe that the administrators need to seriously consider if it\u2019s time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the majority of fans who completed this survey are not in favour of the move.&nbsp;<strong>72.6%<\/strong>&nbsp;are against four-day Tests, while only&nbsp;<strong>10.8%<\/strong>&nbsp;believe all Tests should be four days. The remaining&nbsp;<strong>16.6%<\/strong>&nbsp;believe only Tests involving the \u201cbig three\u201d should be five days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here is a split by nation in the survey results:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Supported nation<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Yes to 4 day Tests<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Yes but only matches with the \u201cbig 3\u201d should be 5 days<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>No to 4 day Tests<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>India<\/td><td>7.74%<\/td><td>20.68%<\/td><td>77.31%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Australia<\/td><td>10.63%<\/td><td>18.75%<\/td><td>70.63%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>England<\/td><td>5.65%<\/td><td>20.97%<\/td><td>73.39%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South Africa<\/td><td>18.93%<\/td><td>5.32%<\/td><td>76.33%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Others, including WI, NZ, PAK, USA, NEP, AFG, ZIM, SL, BAN, IRE<\/td><td>20.45%<\/td><td>9.09%<\/td><td>69.70%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-current-world-test-championship-format\"><strong>Current World Test Championship format<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans are in favour of improvements being made to the current World Test Championship (WTC) format. An overwhelming&nbsp;<strong>81.4%<\/strong>&nbsp;of respondents believe there needs to be a more equal share of matches played between all teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2023-25 cycle, England (22), Australia (19) and India (19) played a far greater number of matches than New Zealand (14), Pakistan (14), West Indies (13), Sri Lanka (13), South Africa (12) and Bangladesh (12).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other findings from this survey include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>54.9%<\/strong>\u00a0believe there should be bonus points for away wins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>25.2%<\/strong>\u00a0are in favour of the cycle being four years instead of two.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>24.1%<\/strong>\u00a0wish to see more lenient penalties or the complete removal of docked points for slow over rates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>7.8%<\/strong>\u00a0are happy with how the WTC format is currently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here is a split by nation in the survey results:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Supported nation<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>More equal share of matches<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Bonus points for away wins<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Change cycle to 4 years<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Less penalties for over rates<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>No changes<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>India<\/td><td>78.72%<\/td><td>61.16%<\/td><td>25.30%<\/td><td>23.51%<\/td><td>8.33%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Australia<\/td><td>77.50%<\/td><td>50%<\/td><td>30%<\/td><td>29.38%<\/td><td>10.63%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>England<\/td><td>84.68%<\/td><td>52.42%<\/td><td>33.87%<\/td><td>35.48%<\/td><td>4.84%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South Africa<\/td><td>90.53%<\/td><td>47.34%<\/td><td>25.44%<\/td><td>14.20%<\/td><td>5.32%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Others, including WI, NZ, PAK, USA, NEP, AFG, ZIM, SL, BAN, IRE<\/td><td>87.88%<\/td><td>50%<\/td><td>25.76%<\/td><td>22.72%<\/td><td>3.79%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We also offered an open-ended answer to this question, where fans had the opportunity to share some additional thoughts on the WTC format. Some of the suggestions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More points if the win comes against a higher-ranked team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equal spread of matches against teams ranked in the top three, middle three and bottom three depending on rankings at the start of the cycle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Including Ireland and Afghanistan in the WTC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum three matches in each WTC series.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The final should be a three-Test series.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Top three should qualify to the next round where second and third go head-to-head in a playoff for a spot in the final against the team who finishes first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Final should be hosted by whoever finishes top of the table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two-group system with six teams in each group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-the-icc-can-encourage-more-players-around-the-world-to-play-tests\"><strong>How the ICC can encourage more players around the world to play Tests<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The rise of T20 leagues and lucrative financial opportunities are a clear threat to Test cricket.&nbsp;Fans believe more should be done by the ICC to ensure the longest format survives around the world. Here are some of the key findings from the survey:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>71.7%<\/strong>\u00a0of fans believe there should be a more organised calendar with set windows for Tests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>64%<\/strong>\u00a0believe the ICC should adjust their revenue model so more funds go to smaller nations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>39.1%<\/strong>\u00a0said there should be a central fund for player payments on top of their match payments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here is a split by nation in the survey results:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Supported nation<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Organised calendar: windows for Tests<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Adjust IC revenue: More funds to smaller nations<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Central fund for player payments on top of their match payments<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>India<\/td><td>71.43%<\/td><td>59.22%<\/td><td>35.42%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Australia<\/td><td>71.3%<\/td><td>66.25%<\/td><td>45%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>England<\/td><td>66.13%<\/td><td>70.91%<\/td><td>38.71%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>South Africa<\/td><td>79.29%<\/td><td>70.41%<\/td><td>43.79%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Others, including WI, NZ, PAK, USA, NEP, AFG, ZIM, SL, BAN, IRE<\/td><td>68.94%<\/td><td>75.76%<\/td><td>46.97%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This was another question which had an open-ended option, and fans provided some additional feedback. A common suggestion was that every ICC-sanctioned T20 league should contribute a certain percentage to a pool that can help fund Test cricket globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-many-countries-will-be-playing-test-cricket-by-2030-plus-should-the-toss-remain\"><strong>How many countries will be playing Test cricket by 2030? Plus, should the toss remain?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A report in the&nbsp;<em>Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>&nbsp;in 2024 stated that Test cricket may be played by six nations in 2030.&nbsp;<strong>44%<\/strong>&nbsp;believe this is a realistic possibility, while&nbsp;<strong>30.1%<\/strong>&nbsp;believe it won\u2019t happen.
